Payne puts in terrific display to test Van Gerwen – Match Report

Josh took on Michael van Gerwen in the Last 16 of the Players Championship Finals in Minehead.

What a start it was for Josh as he took the opening leg in 17 darts on D9 after Van Gerwen missed a dart at D7.

Josh broke Van Gerwen’s throw in the next leg to establish a 2-0 lead on the World number one taking out D16 after MVG missed four darts for the leg.

Josh should of arguably been 3-0 and 4-0 up respectively adter missing two darts at a double in each leg as Van Gerwen levelled the match at 2-2.

Van Gerwen went in at the break 3-2 ahead after firing in a twelve darter.

Van Gerwen extended his lead to 4-2 after taking out D12 for a 16 darter with Josh waiting on 63.

Josh fired in his second maximum of the match in the next leg but unfortunately missed three darts at double allowing Van Gerwen to take out 112 to move 5-2 ahead.

Van Gerwen extended his lead to 6-2 with a 12 darter, Josh fired in his third maximum but would of needed a nine-darter to break MvG’s throw.

Van Gerwen went 7-2 ahead in unstoppable style as he hit a 11 darter while Josh left 101 after 12.

Van Gerwen went 8-2 ahead in the next leg with a 14 darter with Josh waiting on 70 after hitting a 140 backed up by a 135.

Van Gerwen went on to win the match taking the last two legs in 11 and 12 darts.

Josh played superb in this match arguably his finest performance on TV averaging just under 100 (99.79) Van Gerwen had to fire in legs of 12 darts or under to beat Josh who has a very bright future ahead.
